In the early 1980s, the Sooty Show changed noticably - the show moved from being "sketch-based" to being based around the Sooteries cottage, Matthew Corbett grew a beard, and Brenda Longman replaced Marjorie Corbett as the voice of Soo. But there were other changes happening in the entertainment world as well, as home video was emerging, with many video companies rushing to release some of the most popular films and TV shows of the day in order to capitalise on this growing market.
The Sooty Show was no exception - starting with The Adventures of Sooty, everyone's favourite magical bear enjoyed consistent sales on VHS (and even the early Betamax format!) throughout the 1980s and right into the early 2000's before DVD took over. When DVD became the dominant home video format, a number of cult kids' TV shows started to find their way onto DVD, a mixture of releases targetted at nostalgic adults who grew up in the 1970s / 1980s and releases of classic children's programmes aimed at today's children's market.
The Sooty Show has seen several DVD releases covering all of these types, all single-disc releases featuring a selection of episodes. Fans of the show can only hope that at some stage the series is given the detailed, "season sets"-style release it deserves, but nevertheless it is still a treat to be able to watch classic Sooty Show episodes in DVD quality!
